A terrible and tragic accident on Interstate 95 near Smithfield NC has claimed the lives of two gentlemen and resulted in numerous other injuries.
The accident happened around 3:00 am on Wednesday morning near exit 95. According to reports, a Chevrolet Avalanche traveling northbound crossed over the median of I-95 and struck a Dodge minivan heading southbound. The impact apparently sheared the roof off of the minivan and killed passengers Michael Brennan and Mark Klein. Seven people from the Chevrolet were injured including several children. the people in the Avalanche were apparently from Florida.
It is not clear what caused the Avalanche to cross the median. However, in accidents such as this there are usually a few likely explanations – driver fatigue or driver distraction. In either case, this is a terrible accident with tragic consequences.
