A gentleman named James McCandless was tragically killed on Thursday afternoon when he was hit by a car while walking along NC Highway 11 near Pink Hill, North Carolina.

According to available information, Mr. McCandless was a resident of an assisted living facility but was out walking in the road when he was hit by a southbound car. The assisted living facility was less than a mile from the site of the accident. Under these circumstances, we would have some questions as to why Mr. McCandless was away from the assisted living facility and whether he should have been supervised at the time of the wreck.

Mr. McCandless was 52 years old at the time of this accident and reports indicate he was from Jacksonville, North Carolina.

The Raleigh News & Observer published a very interesting story today about a tragic death at the Franklin Manor Assisted Living facility in Youngsville, North Carolina. The facility, which touts itself as a facility specializing in the care of individuals suffering from memory problems, was the home of Larry Rozar until September 3, 2014. On that day, his roommate at the facility violently attacked him and the injuries were so bad that he passed away two weeks later. The roommate was not charged with any crime – apparently because he suffers from dementia.

Now, the family of Mr. Rozar has apparently had virtually no response from anyone regarding what happened to Larry. As noted in the well-written article, this situation certainly deserves some investigation. Particularly of concern is what responsibility the staff at Franklin Manor had to supervisor and ensure the safety of its residents. Hopefully the family of Mr. Rozar will eventually find answers to their questions.

A terrible story involves claims that several residents at the Pinecrest Gardens assisted living facility in Lillington were raped by a medical technician.

The complaints have apparently come to light after the worker was arrested on charges of raping a resident who was mentally unstable and physically helpless. Other residents have also reported misconduct after being interviewed by members of the Harnett County Sheriff’s department. The employee had worked at Pinecrest for less than two years.

According to North Carolina DHHS records, Pinecrest Gardens has not any any serious violations of North Carolina Adult Care regulations.

An interesting article today in the Raleigh News and Observer discusses bed bug infestations that are now common in many North Carolina assisted living facilities and adult care homes.

One of the problems noted in the article is that the elderly are often unable to recognzie and communicate the problem of the bed bugs. This is particularly true in Alzheimer’s units.

Indeed, the problem of bed bugs is growing all the time. At first, we saw reports mainly from larger cities such as New York but the problem in North Carolina is very real.

Our firm has received numerous calls from folks suffering from the bed bug problems. For many people, the problems are not just physical (bite) but psychological as the bugs are constantly attacking them. They can’t sit on their couch or even sleep without being attacked.
