Lumberton NC Logging Truck Crash Kills Stephanie Smith and Injures Three Children

A very tragic crash in Lumberton, North Carolina has resulted in the death of a woman named Stephanie Smith and serious injuries to three children and one other adult.  The wreck happened around 6:49 pm at the intersection of Collins Road and Broadridge Road.  According to available information, an empty tractor-trailer logging truck failed to stop at the stop sign for the intersection and hit a pickup truck carrying Ms. Smith and the children and other adult.

Th three children in the pickup were very seriously injured and transported to various regional trauma centers.  The other adult in the pickup was taken to the UNC Burn Center in Chapel Hill.  Ms. Smith was 34 years old.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol troopers indicate that charges are pending against the logging truck driver.  At this point, it is not known whether the driver of the logging truck was distracted or using a cell phone.  Although, crashes such as this are frequently caused by distracted drivers.  Hopefully, the State Highway Patrol has confiscated the driver’s phone to determine if this played a role in the crash.
