On Thursday night a Raleigh moped driver was seriously injured in a north Raleigh accident.
The accident happened when a car turned into the path of moped driver John Mahaffey. The accident happened on Spring Forest Road near Capital Boulevard. Mr. Mahaffey was critically injured and taken to WakeMed which is the area Level 1 trauma center.
The article about this accident indicates that police think the headlamp on the moped may not have been functioning. It is not clear where the police obtained this information. In some cases, a filament analysis on the headlamp can provide some indication of whether the headlamp was illuminated but this is not always conclusive. Many factors can influence the filament analysis including the impact velocity and area of impact. Furthermore, many mopeds and scooters have headlamps that automatically activate upon ignition which may be the case here. Hopefully, the police are attempting to contact area businesses to capture any surveillance video that might show the moped prior to impact.
