A man was being treated Tuesday night at Moses Cone Hospital after he was hit by a car while he was walking on Fairfax Road, police said.

A green Honda Accord, which now has front-end damage, struck 37-year-old Benny Smith of Greensboro at 9 p.m. Tuesday on the 2100 block of Fairfax Road and fled the scene toward Merritt Drive, Lt. J.P. Lowdermilk said.

Smith does not have any life-threatening injuries, Lowdermilk said. Smith is alert and conscious.

Members of Congress from North Carolina have been pushing the United States Navy to evaluate the possible link between decades of water contamination and cancer found among former residents of Camp Lejuene in Jacksonville.  As reported by the News & Observer, the Navy is not willing to fund the study despite indications that thousands of people were exposed to carcinogenic chemicals in their drinking water.  As lawyers and residents of North Carolina, we certainly hope that the U.S. Government addresses this terrible situation for the people that drank the contaminated water.
